Health, Safety & Wellness

Working Together to Keep Our Community Safe

At Tender Tree Montessori, the health, safety, and well-being of children is a shared responsibility between families and the program. Our community includes infants and young children whose immune systems are still developing, including children who may be more medically vulnerable.

By working together and following clear guidelines, we create a safer, more responsive environment for all families.

Our Commitment to Health & Safety

We follow:

Alberta Child Care Licensing Regulation

Alberta Health Services guidelines

Our approved Program Plan and Parent Handbook

Our policies are designed to:

Reduce the spread of illness

Support children’s ability to participate fully in the program

Protect the well-being of children, families, and educators

When Children Must Stay Home

Children must remain at home if they are experiencing symptoms that may be contagious or prevent them from participating comfortably in daily routines.

Please keep your child home if they have:

Fever (38.3°C / 101°F or higher)

Vomiting or diarrhea

Difficulty breathing or wheezing

Contagious conditions (e.g., flu, hand-foot-mouth, chickenpox)

Undiagnosed rashes or severe itching

Lethargy, persistent crying, or signs of being unwell

Head lice or other communicable infestations

During periods of elevated illness in the community, the program may implement stricter illness exclusion guidelines to protect children’s health.

If a Child Becomes Ill While in Care

If a child shows signs of illness during the day:

They will be separated from the group in a quiet, supervised space

Families will be contacted for prompt pick-up

Children must remain home until they are well enough to return

These decisions are made with care, compassion, and the child’s best interest in mind.

Medication Administration

For the safety of all children:

Medication is only administered when required forms are completed

Prescription medication must be clearly labeled with the child’s name

Educators cannot administer medication without written authorization

Please speak with the program team if your child requires ongoing or emergency medication so we can support safe planning.

Immunocompromised Children & Community Care

Our program serves children who are highly susceptible to illness due to age or medical vulnerability. For this reason, adherence to illness and medication policies is essential.

Sending a sick child to care places others at risk and may result in automatic send-home procedures. We appreciate families’ support in protecting the safety of the entire community.

Hygiene, Sanitation & Daily Practices

To maintain a healthy environment, we:

Follow strict handwashing and sanitization routines

Clean and disinfect classrooms and shared materials regularly

Support toileting and diapering with hygienic, respectful practices

Promote safe food handling and allergy-aware environments

Outdoor Play & Weather Considerations

Outdoor play is an important part of children’s daily routine. Families are asked to provide weather-appropriate clothing so children can safely enjoy outdoor exploration whenever conditions allow.

In cases of extreme weather, the program may modify schedules or close for safety reasons. Families will be notified as early as possible.

A Shared Role in Wellness

Families play a critical role in maintaining a healthy childcare community. Open communication, honesty about symptoms, and strong partnership help us:

Prevent outbreaks

Reduce disruptions to care

Support children’s comfort and well-being

We truly appreciate families working alongside us to keep our community safe.
